If peppermint is the loud, fiery cousin of the mint family, spearmint is the gentle one, soft, sweet, endlessly giving. It heals, sweetens, sharpens the mind, and draws money.

And all without the… harshness that some of the more intense herbs carry. Spearmint is one of the herbs I point baby witches toward because it’s a great way to put a little bit of a speed vibe into spellwork without making it too harsh.

Spearmint takes its name from the nymph Minthe, a naiad of the underworld who was transformed into the fragrant plant we know today. Hades, unable to undo the change, gifted her a sweet scent so she would forever delight all who brushed against her.

That really sums up the herb’s properties. A gentle transformation with sweetness rising from sorrow and a quiet connection to the deeper mysteries.

Healing is spearmint’s first language.

I use it in nearly all of my healing work by tucking it into green poppets or steeping it into tea that I sip slowly while visualizing recovery. I add it to a warm healing bath when comfort is needed. It has a particular affinity for the breath and the lungs, which makes it my go-to herb whenever someone needs help simply breathing easier, physically or emotionally.

What I love most is how kind its healing energy feels. Some herbs push or shove but Spearmint holds.

Protection While You Dream

One of spearmint’s oldest uses is protective sleep.

Stuffing a pillow or sachet with spearmint guards the sleeper from nightmares and malicious magic, or from other unpleasant energies that prowl in the night. I keep a small dream pillow of it for the rough nights, and a vase of fresh sprigs on the nightstand works just as well.

Used sparingly, it can also open the door to prophetic dreams, particularly ones that answer questions of love or money. A word of experience: a little goes a long way here. Too much mint near your head and you’ll be sharp-minded at 3 a.m. instead of dreaming sweetly.

How to Use Spearmint in Spellwork and Rituals

Spearmint is endlessly flexible.

A Simple Spearmint Prosperity Ritual

You’ll need: a green candle, a small dish of dried spearmint, your wallet, and a coin.

1. Cleanse your space and light the green candle.
2. Circle the candle with the dried spearmint, moving clockwise.
3. Hold the coin in both hands and visualize money flowing toward you with ease.
4. Rub a pinch of spearmint gently over your wallet, then place the coin inside it.
5. Speak the chant three times, then let the candle burn down safely.

Started leaving fresh spearmint sprigs at my Persephone altar around the dark half of the year, and the shift in my underworld journeying work has been noticeable. The herb seems to remember her own story, you know? It knows where it came from. If you mix spearmint with mugwort in a dream sachet instead of using it solo, you still get the prophetic dream boost without that sharpness OP warned about. The mugwort kind of cushions it.

For me, spearmint and peppermint are interchangeable for me when it comes to cleansing and protection. I just prefer the taste of spearmint.

Something I haven’t seen mentioned though: spearmint pairs beautifully with rose quartz on a love altar. The two together amplify that soft heart-energy you were describing. My self-love work feels stronger when I combine them. Not sure why exactly, but it just does.

No judgment, but I think a lot of folks sleep on spearmint’s throat chakra connection that OP mentioned in the correspondences table.

But dried leans way more Mercury/Air in my practice, almost like the drying process shifts the elemental signature, which makes sense alchemically.

Freeze fresh spearmint leaves into ice cubes and drop them into your cleansing floor wash water. As they melt they release that Venus/Water energy slowly throughout the mopping session, and your house smells incredible after.
