Chaos witch.
You just grab bits from everywhere- sigils, belief shifting, whatever resonates- and twist them into something that works for you. No set tools or altar setup required. Just breathwork or staring at a wall till reality gets soft around the edges. Last week I drew a sigil on a coffee mug with sharpie for daily energy boosts, charged it up, and felt wired the entire day.
It blends well with tech stuff too. I use randomizer apps in spells sometimes, which sounds ridiculous but works. Give it a try. Scribble one right now, even on a napkin or whatever.

A witch is a witch. Magick is magick. Use whatever works, keep a journal, practice daily, and stop stressing over labels that book publishers and social media only started pushing like ten or fifteen years ago (if that).
None of those categories matter as much as the actual work.
The labels are more of an online community thing. Just experiment with different practices and see what resonates with you.
Honestly, the green and kitchen paths just melted into one thing for me ages ago. Like someone’s cauldron is literally a crockpot and their grimoire doubles as a recipe binder.
The garden herbs end up in the soup, the soup ends up being a spell. At some point the lines got so blurry I stopped trying to find them (not sure they were ever really there). But yeah, crockpot witch. Guilty.
For me, the body cue is almost always a sudden warmth in my solar plexus, like someone lit a match behind my ribs. The first time I actually noticed it was maybe three years ago. I was making a rosemary and honey tea for a friend who was going through a rough patch, and right as I poured the water, my whole chest just… opened. Warm and wide. I hadn’t set any formal intention. I was just stirring and thinking about her healing. But that tea did something. She called me the next morning and said she’d slept through the night for the first time in weeks.
As for thresholds, absolutely yes, but not always dusk. Mine tend to land hardest in that strange pocket right before dawn, the 4am window where the world feels like it’s holding its breath. I once woke bolt upright at that hour with the absolute certainty that I needed to bury a piece of black tourmaline by my front door. No dream, no logic, just knowing. Did it barefoot in the dark. Two days later a really toxic situation that had been circling my household just… dissolved.

These labels are mostly just doorways into research and community to figure out where you resonate. The OP even says most of us blend multiple threads together. What bugs me is when newer practitioners feel like they need to pick one box and stay there forever. The craft is too fluid for rigid categorization.
Yes, exactly this. One tip from years of doing it the fixed label way before switching: keep an elemental journal for one full wheel of the year. Just one line a day noting which element feels loudest in your body. You’ll start to see your own pattern, and it almost never matches the tidy correspondences in any book.
A few things that helped me work with shifting elemental dominance:
- Build a modular altar. One central working space, four small dishes (soil, water, candle, feather or incense) that you can move forward or back depending on what’s leading. Mine rotates with the cross-quarters.
- Cast your circle in the order the elements are actually showing up for you that day, not the standard east-south-west-north. The energy difference is wild once you try it.
- Watch your cravings. Salty foods, long baths, restlessness near open flame, needing wind on your face. The body knows before the mind labels it.
