So I just took in this little black-furred girl from a rough situation, and I want to give her a name that ties into nature and the craft. It just fits her.

 ![black cat with no name](https://forum.witchesgrimoire.org/uploads/default/original/1X/26a91b66a5be02ca6267787e16f0fb331d0095d9.jpeg)

She’s got one pale whisker, just the one, standing out against all that black, which makes me want something with duality to it. Lunar, maybe. Or herb-inspired (honestly either direction could work). And she has this energy about her that I can’t fully explain, but it’s part of why a witchy name feels right rather than something I’m forcing on her.

Would love to hear ideas if anyone has them…

Pyewacket. The familiar from Bell, Book and Candle, and long before that, one of the names an accused witch in 17th century England gave for her familiar spirits. Centuries of witchy history packed into those three syllables.

For a black cat with that single pale whisker against the dark, a name with that kind of historical weight feels right.

What a cutie!

Silhouette could work. Though I keep getting hung up on the nickname. Would ‘Silly’ undercut the witchy vibe entirely, or does that playful duality actually fit with the whole one-pale-whisker thing?

Honestly, Thelma might be perfect for that reinventing-herself energy you’re describing.

Movie-witch names like Glinda used to feel too on the nose to me, but they’ve grown on me. Hazel works. Rowen too.

I’d suggest sitting with her for a full moon cycle before deciding on a name.

For that whisker, I’d lean toward something like Mugwort (dream herb, but also has that mischievous duality you’re describing) or Vesper, which carries both the evening star and the hush before something starts. You could also name her after the plant you reach for most in your practice.

Skip the name Salem from Sabrina. Go for something with a little attitude instead. A rescue with that much presence deserves a name that hints at her backstory. Something like Mercy or Prue feels weighty without being costume-y.

My black cat came from a similar spot, and that single light whisker pushed me toward Rue. It’s got that sharp edge in the garden but still pulls double duty for clearing spaces.

I tested it out loud a few times while she watched from the windowsill, and she actually moved closer instead of bolting. The ‘sharp’ part felt honest given where she started.

If she loves your herb garden or curling up on fresh plants, Sage or Nepeta (catnip’s botanical name) could work.
If she’s more of a midnight prowler, Nyx (Greek goddess of the night) or Persephone might match her vibe.
And if that one whisker sparkles, something like Nova or Starling could capture that.
If none of these feel right, just see which name she responds to, since sometimes you just know when she twitches her ears at one.

Years ago I took in a soot-black little girl with one white toe. I was convinced she needed a grand lunar name right away, but she refused every single one I tried.

After a week of watching her sleep only in thresholds and windowsills, she became Liminal, with Limi for everyday. It fit because her whole presence was about in-between spaces.

For your girl, that single pale whisker makes me think of Meridian or Nyxie. Something that honors the black fur but lets that one bright line matter.

Watch where she chooses to sit. Cats are good at naming themselves through habit.

Just wanted to add, think about how the name actually sounds when you’re calling her in from outside or at the vet.

Learned this the hard way with a cat named Mugwort. Beautiful in ritual, but a nightmare yelling across a parking lot at dusk.

Just a warning: whatever you pick, make sure it survives the 3am zoomies test. I named mine something very dignified and now I scream “Barnabas GET OFF THE altar” at least twice a week.

Strega. It’s Italian for witch and it sounds nice on a black cat. Easy to call out loud too.

Penumbra! That pale whisker against all the black fits perfectly. Penumbra means the partial shadow between light and dark. Plus you can call her Penny for short.

Oh I love this one! Soot Sprite, like from the Studio Ghibli movies? Those little fuzzy black dust creatures with the big eyes. It’s got that magical vibe without being too on-the-nose witchy, plus it just sounds adorable for a black cat.

Does she seem more like a moon-window watcher? Or maybe a little kitchen familiar who wants to be in the herbs and jars.

That one pale whisker makes me think of names like Thistle or Moonseed, with a little bite but still living and rooted.

OMG, so happy for you and your little kitty! That one pale whisker is her secret moonbeam.

When I rescued my own midnight panther, I ended up naming her **Basilia** (after basil, it has this protective vibe to me) and she lit right up at the sound of it. Maybe try **Lightning** for that flash of white fur, or **Starwhisper** … see what she responds to. Say each one during cat-care or cuddle time. The name that makes her eyes light up or gets her purring is probably the one.

Trust your gut, you’ll figure it out.

I’d make a short list and test the names out loud during feeding time. The name that feels powerful in your head isn’t always the one that feels right in your mouth.

Try pairing a formal craft name with a soft house name, like Persephone called Percy or Belladonna called Bella. Since she came from a rough situation, I’d avoid anything too sharp-sounding if she startles easily. Names with soft consonants like Lunaire or Sylvie can feel protective without being heavy.

You could also pull from your actual working notes, like what moon phase she arrived under or what herb was on your altar that week. That could anchor the choice.
