Blessed be, everyone! I thought I’d share my protection oil recipe I call Hearthward Oilbecause its purpose is to guard the self and the home the way a hearth fire keeps the dark and cold at bay. It draws on classic protective correspondences, but the blend and chant are my own.
Of course… feel free to use this recipe or adapt it to suit your own needs.
Why These Ingredients
Protection work in the Craft traditionally leans on herbs ruled by Mars and the Sun, fiery and banishing energies that help set boundaries. I’ve balanced those with a touch of lunar calm so the oil shields without bristling. You want a warded door… not a fortress under siege. ![]()
Ingredients
-
2 tbsp carrier oil (olive oil for tradition and abundance, or jojoba if you want it to keep longer)
-
3 drops rosemary essential oil for purification and defense. The old saying goes that where rosemary thrives, the household is guarded.
-
2 drops frankincense, which raises vibration, consecrates, and drives out what doesn’t belong (you can read a full guide of the properties here which is where I got the idea from).
-
1 drop clove, a fierce little banisher that stops gossip and ill intent aimed your way.
-
1 dried bay leaf, whole, for victory over obstacles. Write a single word of intent on it (“SAFE” or “WARD”) before adding.
-
A pinch of black salt (or coarse sea salt if you don’t keep black salt) for grounding and absorbing negativity.
-
1 small piece of dried angelica root (optional) for guardian energy. Some call it the herb of the protective spirit.
-
A small dark glass bottle (amber or cobalt).
Timing and Method
Blend during the waxing moon if you’re building new protections, or on a Tuesday (Mars’s day) for extra defensive fire. The full moon works for charging the finished oil.
-
Cleanse your space and tools however your practice calls for. You can use smoke, sound, visualization, or a simple sweeping of the energy with your hands.
-
Add the carrier oil to your bottle, then the essential oils one at a time, naming each ingredient’s purpose aloud as it goes in.
-
Slide in the bay leaf, the salt, and the angelica root.
-
Cap the bottle and hold it between both palms. Picture a ring of warm amber light rising around you, a hearth-glow that nothing harmful can cross.
-
Rock the bottle gently in rhythm as you speak the chant:
By flame of hearth and ring of stone, I ward this body, blood, and bone.
No ill may enter, none may stay, what means me harm shall turn away. By waxing moon and morning sun, the circle’s sealed, the work is done.
Seal it with “So mote it be” and let the bottle rest on your altar or a windowsill in moonlight overnight.
How to Use the Oil
-
Anoint doorframes, windowsills, and thresholds with a dab on your finger, tracing a small pentacle or a simple ring.
-
Dress protection candles (black or white) before burning.
-
Touch a drop to the back of your neck or pulse points before entering draining situations.
-
Anoint amulets, keys, or the underside of your doormat.
Recharge the oil each full moon by repeating the chant, and remake the batch when the scent fades, usually within a few months, with olive oil.
Blessed be
