Hands are just different, energy-wise.
Considering getting a witchy hand tattoo and I’d love to see some ideas if anyone has done this? I keep going back and forth. Has anyone found that certain sigils or symbols actually feel more potent when inked on the hands versus other placements?

Yeah, hands carry different energy. Traditions often tie them to creation and action, like shaping things or directing energy, blessing and banishing. So anything inked there gets touched every time you cast or work.
I’ve got a small protection sigil on the side of my pointer finger and another near the webbing by my thumb. The thumb one feels more active during herb work or candle magic, like the movements recharge it. I mostly notice it in ritual.
Most of my hand ink is herbal, a sprig of mugwort along my wrist, tiny rosemary on a knuckle, lavender on the other wrist. Mugwort for dreams and protection, lavender for cleansing, rosemary for memory. When I’m making tinctures or harvesting, it really feels like the plants on my skin are part of it.
Inside the palm rarely holds ink well. Skin’s too thick. Sides of the hand, knuckles, fingers, and back all take better.
Runes feel especially right on hands if you actually work with them. Mine are on the sides of my fingers, one per digit. I drew each one daily for months, meditated on them, and only inked the ones that stuck.
Some runes (Algiz and Othala especially) have been co-opted by white supremacist groups, so strangers may read them that way. Bindrunes are fine since they fuse multiple runes into one mark. Algiz layered with Berkana for protected growth, for example. Nobody but you knows what’s in it.
Lavender and rosemary have always been my plants, so that’s what I went with for my left hand. First tattoo actually. There’s some deeper meaning in there too that felt right for hand placement.
I have an eye on the inside of my left wrist, not technically the hand but close enough that I see it every time I lift a cup. And there were months I resented it. Months where I felt watched by my own tattoo, if that makes sense.
Did anyone else go through a period of mourning, or maybe resistance, after getting something this visible inked?
The other thing I keep circling back to is palm vs back of hand. How did you decide? I keep dreaming about a small sigil on my palm, just a simple one, nothing elaborate, but the practical part of me knows palms reject ink like crazy.
Since hands represent earth element, I’m thinking of something with good ‘feng shui’ for the body that keeps my chakras aligned. More about energetic placement than symbolism.
Just an idea but I’m really tempted:
I think whatever you choose to do, you should choose something personal. Something that means something to you that you connect with.
My grandmother used to say your dominant hand gives and your other hand receives, so think about which energy you want flowing where.
I put a tiny crescent on my receiving palm and I notice money and gifts differently now, like there’s a little catch basin there.
Book a henna session first and live with the design for a week. Talked myself out of two ideas that way (and into the one I wear now).
My lotus flower tattoo turned out to be a meaningful choice for me. I started my craft while living in a Hindu country, studying under this powerful yoga teacher, and the lotus just felt right as a marker of where my spiritual path began. It still carries that energy for me.
What’s the vibe though? Like, full “don’t mess with me” energy, or more of an “I’ll hex you but compassionately” situation?
