There aren’t many metals I work with but I like using Copper when a spell or ritual is starting to feel stale. Silver reflects and iron repels, while gold holds court, but copper… carries.
It is the wire that connects one working to another, the living bridge between my hands and the world I’m trying to change. If you’ve ever wrapped a tired wand in copper and felt it wake up, you already know what I mean.
Copper was one of the first metals our ancestors ever worked. There’s a little copper pendant out of northern Iraq that’s nearly nine thousand years old, and that long, intimate history is woven into everything it does spiritually.
A metal that humanity has shaped for that long has had a very long time to learn how to listen to us. This is how I understand and work with it. 
Metaphysical Properties of Copper
Copper’s metaphysical character flows directly from its physical nature. Among all the metals it conducts electricity second only to silver, and on the subtle planes it conducts energy just as eagerly. Everything copper “does” magically tends to come back to that single ability.
- Energy conduction and amplification: it channels raised power and directs it while intensifying the flow, which is why it’s prized in wands and tools.
- Feminine, receptive energy: copper draws toward and gathers, rather than commanding or banishing.
- Healing and polarity balance: it is believed to balance the body’s projective and receptive flows, the reasoning behind those old copper bracelets.
- Harmonizing and grounding: it settles restless energy and brings opposing forces into balance.
- A bridge between physical and astral: it carries information between crystals and auras to the spirit world.
- Divination and dowsing: its sensitivity makes it the classic metal for dowsing rods and pendulum work.
- Protection from negativity: worn or carried, it shields the aura and deflects ill-wishing.

Copper Magickal Properties
The Great Conductor
This is copper’s signature and the property most witches probably know it for.
Because it carries energy so freely, copper is unmatched for channeling and amplifying power in ritual, directing it with ease. A copper wand, even a simple length of pipe capped with a quartz point, will pull energy from your core and project it cleanly out the tip as it runs up the shaft. When my own working feels scattered, I hold copper and immediately the current organizes itself, the way iron filings snap into line around a magnet.
The same quality makes copper a master amplifier for stones. Wrap a crystal in copper wire and you don’t merely decorate it, you extend and broadcast its field. I keep copper in my grids as the connective lines between stones, turning a scatter of individual crystals into one continuous circuit. For any spell that involves crafting, weaving, building, or enchanting with your hands, copper lends that same constructive and creative energy.
Venus’s Metal
Copper has belonged to Venus since antiquity.
The metal came in great quantity from Cyprus, the island sacred to the goddess of love, and its very name carries her address. Polished copper was the substance of her mirrors, and so the metal that reflected beauty back to the beholder became the metal of beauty itself. When I work love, attraction, sensuality, friendship, or reconciliation, copper is on the altar.
What I love about Venusian copper is how it works.
It draws and harmonizes by placing you in Venus’s current, and that current brings things together gently. I’ll wear a copper ring or band when I want to move through the world as something magnetic rather than forceful, and copper set with emerald is the old, reliable charm for calling love toward you.
The Balancer and Bridge
Copper’s healing reputation rests on balance. It equalizes the body’s projective and receptive energies, smoothing the blockages that breed disease. On the energetic level I find copper genuinely steadies imbalance, grounding anxious, jangling currents back into something calm and usable.
It is also a bridge. Copper conducts between the physical and the astral, between your aura and another’s, between the seen and the unseen, which is exactly why it has always been the dowser’s metal.
Copper rods and pendulums answer because copper is sensitive to subtle current and willing to translate it into motion. When I want a clear channel to spirit or a steady hand in divination, copper opens the line.
Copper Ritual & Spellwork
In daily practice copper is endlessly versatile: ring a candle with copper coins to amplify a working, wrap your wand or a crystal in copper wire, lay copper rods through a grid, carry a small piece for protection, or hold a copper pendulum for yes-and-no work.
Because it answers to Venus, it shines brightest on a Friday and during the love-soaked sabbats of Beltane and Litha but here’s a little ritual you can work with any week of the year:
A Copper Rite to Draw Love and Harmony
- On a Friday, cleanse a small piece of copper (a coin, a ring or a coil of wire) under cool running water and pat it dry.
- Set a green or pink candle on your altar and place the copper at its base.
- Light the candle and hold your hands over the copper, picturing warm, rose-gold light pooling in the metal.
- Speak the chant below three times, letting the copper grow warm in your awareness.
- Carry or wear the copper until the love or balance you called has rooted, then thank it and cleanse it again.
